1. The following sent to me by Ann Billings Rheney, 2 Nov 2003. Some of the following documentation she tells me, came to her from Carol Rowe:
There is a Widow's Application for Army Pension, dated 3 September 1864, which states that Elizabeth R. Sanders is the widow of John D. Sanders, deceased, who was a private in Co. D commanded by Cpt. Adams in the 1st Regiment of KY Volunteer Cavalry in the war of 1861, and who died whilst in the service afroesaid, south of Atlanta in the state of Georgia on or about the 31st day of July 1864, from wounds incurred in the service and while in the line of duty. It records the date of their marriage of 3 September 1856. It states that she had by John D. Sanders two children who were under the age of 16 years, Anna Bell Sanders b. 22 Oct 1859 and Alexander b. 14 May, 1861, both of whom lived with the applicant. Elizabeth was living in Campbellsville, Taylor Co., KY at the time.

There is a National Archives Certificate No. 849.733 for pensioner: Elizabeth R. Mudd, former widow of veteran: John D. Sanders. Can No. 64259

There is a Parole Proof of Marriage, Single Affidavit, from the Justice of the Peace for Taylor Co., KY, dated 10 September 1864. It gives Elizabeth's name before marriage as Elizabeth R. Sanders and her name after her marriage as Elizabeth R. Sanders. [She and her husband were cousins, so her maiden name was the same as her married name]. It also gives the date of her marriage to John D. Sanders as 3 September 1856. The declarant was S.B. Durham.

I have a record from the Taylor Circuit County Court, dated 9 July 1871, where two witnesses attest to her first marriage with John D. Sanders and then to her marriage with her second husband, William H. Mudd. It also states that John Douglas and Elizabeth Sanders were married in Tennessee, though their residence at the time was Taylor County, KY, and that their children were Anna Bell and Alexander, minors who became wards of Wm. H. Mudd after he married their mother. [511]

1. “They eloped on horseback to Tennessee, though living in Kentucky at the time. Later, John enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War and was taken captive. For a while he was imprisoned at the notorious Andersonville Confederate Prison in Georgia. The military records are confusing as to where he died, but it may have been at another Confederate facility in Atlanta [Georgia]” [129]
