Frank Sumicek was one of the 74 miners killed that day in 1943 (see Adam Lee and Robert Lee “Bud” Wakenshaw for more on the Smith Mine explosion).

A close up of the sign that hangs at the location of the old Smith Mine in Bearcreek. This photo, and the following five photos, were taken by Teri & Eric Terry in July of 2001. These photos were sent to me by Delilah Evans, Teri’s aunt, who does coal mining research. These three people are not members of this family, but I thought they deserved an honorable mention for donating these great photos.
