MineExplosion1943.jpg
A photo from the United Mine Workers Journal of the rescue after the explosion at Smith Mine in Bearcreek, Mt. 1943. Seen in the picture under the arrow is Robert Lee “Bob” Wakenshaw (age 11) waiting for word from his father and grandfathers.
A photo of what is left of the Smith Mine Works, located between Washoe & Bearcreek, taken in Aug 2002. A long trestle used to extend from the buildings to the mine entrance, which went under the road to the left.
Sign_At_Smith_Mine.jpg
A close up of the sign that hangs at the location of the old Smith Mine in Bearcreek. This photo, and the following photos, were taken by Teri & Eric Terry in July of 2001. These photos were sent to me by Delilah Evans, Teri’s aunt, who does coal mining research. These three people are not members of this family, but I thought they deserved an honorable mention for donating these great photos.
