1. From the Democrat Message, 11 July 1956:“Rachel Crabtree Whittaker was born Feb 5, 1871 and passed away July 1, 1956. She was the daughter of James Crabtree and Margaret Fink Crabtree. She was united in marriage to James Whittaker April 8, 1893. To this union was born four daughters. Three daughters, her mother and father and husband, one brother and seven sisters proceeded her in death. She leaves her bereaved daughter, Mrs. Mide Bowen of Quincy; A sister, Mrs. Charles Clark of Versailles; two granddaughters, Mrs. Sadie Sykes of Renedo, Calif, Mrs. Evoughn Loop of Quincy; one great grandson, Charles Sykes, two great granddaughters, Bonita Loop and Catherine Sykes, a number of nieces and nephews. To know her was to love her. She was a member of the Nazarene Church. Her greatest pleasure was her home and family and her Bible. Truly it can be said a great soul has gone to its reward. The body was brought to Tarrant Funeral Home and services were held Monday afternoon conducted by Rev. Russell Ross of Chambersburg. Flowers were cared for by Ruth Perry and Gennie Perry. Music was furnished by Mrs. Christine Hurst and Mrs. Glen Myers accompanied by Mrs. Gordon Tarrant. Pallbearers were William Hunter, Ivan Ingram, Slater Hanks, Cecil DeLong, Everatt Baker and Robert Wilson. Burial was in Versailles Cemetery.”
