“Last rites for Dr. Ernest Hardin Sanders, 77, Clinton retired dentist and sales manager who died Sept. 30, were held Saturday, Oct. 3, at Consalus Funeral Home. Internment was in Englewood Cemetery. Ernest Hardin Sanders was born June 26, 1887, in Deepwater, one of two children of Robert E. and Cordelia Waggoner Sanders. The brother, Roy, died in infancy. Dr. Sanders grew to manhood in the Deepwater community where he was educated and later became a graduate of Western Dental College, Kansas City. He served in the United States Army Dental Corps in France as a first lieutenant during World War I. In December of 1920 he married Loraine Rogers at Joplin, Mo., who died about three years later on Nov. 7 1923. One child, Virginia Loraine, blessed this union and who now is Mrs., David J. McCarty, 4608 Cavendish Road, Indianapolis, Ind. After his service in the Army, Dr. Sanders practiced dentistry for a time in Manhattan, Kan., then became sales manager for the Columbus Dental Supply Co. of Columbus, Ohio. He lived in Kansas City and was with the business firm for many years. He retired about 30 years ago and moved to Clinton, his residence since. He was a lifelong member of the Deepwater Presbyterian Church, a member of the American Legion, a 50-year member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks and was a member of Xi Psi Phi national dental fraternity. Dr. Sanders was a well-known figure about the Clinton business area since he seldom missed a day of greeting his friends at the Elks and elsewhere when in town. Though quiet and unassuming, he maintained an interest in his fellowman as well as his family also events on the local, state, nationally and international level. He had been in declining health for some time, however he flew to Las Vegas and other points of interest to him. Reserved and independent Dr. Sanders was one who did not wish to bother anyone nor impose upon them. He was respected for his honesty and integrity. Besides his daughter, he leaves a granddaughter, Miss Patricia Ann McCarty, and a grandson, David J. McCarty, Indianapolis, Ind., to whom he was devoted; a number of other relatives and many friends. Among those from a distance attending last rites were: Mr. and Mrs. David J. McCarty and Miss Patricia and the brother-in-law and sister-in-law of Dr. Sanders, Mr. and Mrs. Harry O. Rogers and Mr. and Mrs. Parker O. Rogers, Carthage, Mo.” [316]
