1. From Civil War Service Records:
Name: Ephraim Collins; Residence: Zionsville, Indiana; Enlistment Date: 23 Sep 1864; Distinguished Service: DISTINGUISHED SERVICE; Side Served: Union; State Served: Indiana; Unit Numbers: 591 591; Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 23 Sep 1864, drafted in Company F, 40th Infantry Regiment Indiana on 23 Sep 1864. Mustered out [as Private] Company F, 40th Infantry Regiment Indiana on 16 Jul 1865.
[514]2. Civil War Pension records image found on Ancestry.com shows Ephraim was invalid on 13 Sep 1890 in Iowa, and Elizabeth was collecting pension as a widow on 10 Nov 1890 in Kansas.
3. From posts to the Ancestry.com message board under the surname COLLINS, I found a post from Sandra Miles stating the following:
“Civil War pension document indicates Ephraim COLLINS resided at Iowa Soldiers Home in Marshalltown, Marshall, Iowa on 16 Feb 1907. He has been dropped from pension roll due to his death 11 May 1908 -- assumption he was still at Iowa Soldiers Home.”
4. The 1860 US Census shows Ephraim was unable to read or write at age 32.
