1. From the Democrat Message, 8 October 1941:
“Funeral services were held at the Tarrant Funeral Home Friday afternoon for John Maddox, who passed away Tuesday night in his home near here. Rev. W. H. Long officiated. Mrs. C. H. Burgesser and Mrs. C. L. Reische sang accompanied by Mrs. J. F. Wilson. Pallbearers were Cleo Knowles, Chas. Childers, Chas. Hetrick, Lyman Hetrick, Maurice Hetrick and Fred Fink. John Alexander Maddox was born July 18th, 1865 in the county of Scott in the state of Illinois and passed away September 30, 1941, at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 12 days. He was taken from his mother when two years of age. He was married to Katherine Crabtree September 2, 1895 and was proceeded in death by his wife, two sons, Roy and Clarence Maddox and one daughter, Bertha Maddox. He is survived by three sons and two daughters, Elmer Louis Maddox of Peoria, John Reid Maddox of Versailles, George Frederick Maddox of Topeka, Kansas, Mrs. Grace Pauline Edwards of Peoria and Mrs. Dorothy Ellen Maddox Newell of Versailles. He also leaves fourteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his death.” [122]
