Misc. Notes
1. From an email I received from Lorene Wurm dated 10 Jan 2002, she wrote: “The story goes that my grandfather Thomas was brought over from Gateshead, England by his aunt Lizzie Coulson and her husband when he was only three years old. His mother and father had one other little baby son named James and evidently they were poor and thought Thomas would have a better life in America so gave the older boy to the aunt. She and her husband raised him as their own and gave him their last name of Coulson, but never really adopted him. Elizabeth married Thomas as a Coulson and they had four children, Matthew, Mildred (who died when she was about three years old), Anne, and Leslie. They lived in Streator, Illinois and also Terre Haute, Indiana, then moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. When World War I broke out my grandpa Tom was told he was never adopted and was to return to England and register for the draft. He returned to see his mother and brother, but I guess by that time his father was dead. The war ended, and then because he was never legally adopted, had his children's names changed from Coulson to Marley.”

2. From an email I received from Lorene Wurm, Feb 2002: “Thomas and Elizabeth Marley changed their last name from Coulson to Marley after World War I. Thomas lived from age 3 until his death in the U.S. He just returned as a grown man (with 3 living children of his own) to England to see the mother he had never known. He had always thought he was the son of Aunt Lizzie Coulson and her husband who moved to Los Angeles, California.”

3. In an email from Lorene Wurm, 16 Jan 2002, she wrote: “My Grandpa Thomas and Elizabeth (Gaffey) had 4 children: Matthew, Mildred (who died around 3 yrs. old), Anne and Leslie. They were born in the U.S., also Elizabeth (Gaffey) Marley. Grandpa Thomas Marley lived in the U.S. from age 3, so I don't know if he had to get citizenship. I suppose so, maybe that is when he changed all the names from Coulson to Marley. Thomas only went back for a vist to England. His father was dead by that time and only his mother and younger brother James were alive. What a pity, we know nothing more of that side of the family - they may still live in Gateshead or New Castle, England. Well, they would be dead, but perhaps James had children and they would still be living. Thomas Marley's mother came from Scotland and I believe her name was Anne or Anna Leslie Wolf.”
