1. As told to me by my grandmother, Beatrice Wakenshaw: As a young man, Tom shot himself (or was shot) in the leg climbing over a fence (or possibly getting into a car) while he was hunting in Illinois. He never had the shots removed, and the wounds were never taken care of. He later moved to Ohio and had serious leg problems. They were going to amputate it, but he died from blood poisoning. His leg was frozen (for reasons unknown), and his body (and leg) were brought back to Illinois by his brother, Adam F. Wakenshaw, who was working for the undertaker at Jones’ Funeral Home in Virden, Ill. at the time. He was buried (with his leg) in Auburn Cemetery.
